Long fibers are the point. They act like a sponge that knows when to hold on and when to let go, so roots stay damp without turning into mush. It's the base layer under half the carnivorous plants we grow, and the reason a Venus flytrap can sit in a tray of water and not rot.

For carnivorous plants, use it plain or mixed with perlite, and water only with distilled, reverse osmosis or rain water. For orchids and aroids, pack it loosely so the roots can breathe. For moss poles and kokedama, soak it, wring it out and start sculpting.
