Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa---Southern Purple Pitcher Plant (Venosa) description

🌱🌱 Intermediate "A little picky - but worth it"

A compact southern pitcher plant with deep crimson veining running through every trap — like the standard Purple Pitcher Plant went and got a gothic upgrade.

Meet Sarracenia Purpurea Venosa, the heavily-veined southern cousin of the classic Purple Pitcher Plant. Where standard Sarracenia purpurea ranges all the way up into Canada, venosa sticks to the warmer coastal plains of the southeastern U.S. — and it shows. Its pitchers run rounder, more compact, and drenched in dramatic red venation that only gets darker with more sun.

Currently in 3" planter pot and ships bare root

☀️ Thrives in the Spotlight – Loves full sun. The more light it gets, the deeper and more dramatic the veining becomes.

💦 Drinks Like a Swamp Witch – Keep the soil wet and boggy at all times. Sarracenia is a wetland native — dry soil is its mortal enemy. Rainwater, distilled, or reverse-osmosis water only.

Bug Buffet, Party of One – Those veined little pitchers are real insect traps, luring in gnats and flies with sweet nectar before digesting them.

Perfect for bog gardens, terrariums, or anyone who wants a plant with both style and attitude.

🔹 Care Tips

  • Loves the sun — find it a bright, sunny spot.
  • Keep the soil moist and boggy. Use only distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater. Top-down watering 2–4 times a week.
  • Let it handle the insect situation. If grown indoors, feed every 2–3 weeks.
  • Temperature range: 55–90°F — slightly less cold-hardy than the northern nominate subspecies.
Watering & Feeding

Use only distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water

Keep soil consistently wet; best grown sitting in a tray of water

No need to fertilize — feeds on insects it captures naturally

Growing Medium

Nutrient-poor, acidic mix: 1:1 peat moss and perlite or sand (no fertilizer or compost!)

Must remain wet — do not allow to dry out

Hardiness, Dormancy & Compatible Grow Zones

Cold-hardy and frost-tolerant, though less extreme than the northern nominate subspecies

Sensitive to mineralized water and fertilizer

Dormancy:

  • Winter

Growing Zones (unless Indoors):

Native Area:

Southeastern United States — coastal plain from North Carolina to Louisiana

Propagation

Rhizome division (best in early spring)

Seed (requires cold stratification and patience)

  • Indoors
  • Outdoors
  • Greenhouse
