Aeonium Care Guide: The Drama Queen of Succulents (And We Mean That as a Compliment)

If succulents had a theater kid, it would be the Aeonium. Bold rosettes, moody color shifts, and a growth calendar that runs completely opposite to every other plant you own — Aeoniums do things their way, and honestly? We respect it.

Whether you've got a regal Aeonium 'Ballet', a fiery Aeonium 'Super Bang', a bold Aeonium Kilimanjaro, or a loveable Cupid Aeonium, this guide has you covered.

☀️ Light: Give Them the Spotlight They Deserve

Aeoniums want full sun to partial shade — at least 6 hours of bright light daily. In hot climates, a little afternoon shade prevents sunburn (yes, plants get sunburned too). Indoors, a bright south- or west-facing window is ideal.

Fun fact: More sun = more intense color. Your Aeonium's dramatic hues are basically a flex for how good their light situation is.

💧 Watering: Less Is More (Especially in Summer)

Here's the plot twist that trips everyone up: Aeoniums go dormant in summer. While you're out there sweating and watering everything in sight, your Aeonium is napping. Respect the nap.

  • Spring & Fall (active season): Water deeply, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again.
  • Summer (dormancy): Drastically reduce watering. Once every 3–4 weeks is plenty. Don't panic if leaves drop — it's normal.
  • Winter: Water moderately. They're growing, but slowly.

🌱 Soil: Drainage Is Non-Negotiable

Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Add perlite or coarse pumice for extra drainage. Aeoniums hate wet feet almost as much as they love a good photoshoot.

🌡️ Temperature: Mild & Mediterranean, Please

Aeoniums are native to the Canary Islands, so they prefer mild temperatures between 65–75°F. They're not frost-hardy — bring them indoors when temps drop below 25°F (-4°C). They'll sulk. You'll feel guilty. Just bring them in.

🌿 Fertilizing: Feed the Drama

A diluted balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in fall is all they need. Skip summer fertilizing entirely — feeding a dormant plant is like bringing snacks to someone who's asleep.

🚨 Troubleshooting

  • Leaves dropping in summer: Normal dormancy behavior. Don't overwater to compensate.
  • Leggy, stretched growth: Needs more light. Move it closer to a window or outside.
  • Mushy stem: Overwatering. Let it dry out and check drainage.
  • Faded color: More direct sun will bring those rich tones back.

Aeoniums are the plant equivalent of a slow burn — they take their time, they do things differently, and when they're thriving, they are absolutely stunning. Lean into the drama. It's worth it.
