Succulent Care Guide: The Soak-and-Dry Gospel (And Other Commandments for Happy Succulents)
Succulents are the internet's favorite plant for a reason: they're sculptural, they're forgiving, and they make even the most chaotic plant parent look like they have their life together. But here's the thing — "low maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance." There's a right way to love a succulent, and we're here to preach it.

☀️ Light: Succulents Are Sun Worshippers
Most succulents want 6+ hours of bright, direct light daily. A sunny south-facing windowsill or an outdoor spot with full sun is their happy place. Indoors, the further from the window, the sadder the succulent.
Signs your succulent needs more light: It's stretching dramatically toward the nearest light source (called etiolation). It looks like it's trying to escape. It basically is.
💧 Watering: The Soak-and-Dry Method Is Sacred
Repeat after us: soak, then dry completely before watering again. This is the one rule that will save your succulent's life.
- Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom.
- Wait until the soil is completely bone dry before watering again.
- In summer, this might be every 7–10 days. In winter, every 2–3 weeks.
Overwatering is the #1 cause of succulent death. More succulents have been killed by love (and a watering can) than by neglect. You've been warned.
🌱 Soil & Pots: Drainage or Bust
Regular potting soil holds too much moisture and will rot your succulent from the roots up. Always use:
- Cactus/succulent mix as your base
- Added perlite or coarse pumice for extra drainage (50/50 ratio is ideal)
- A pot with drainage holes — non-negotiable
Terra cotta pots are the gold standard because they're porous and wick away excess moisture. Cute ceramic pots without drainage holes are a trap. A beautiful, Instagram-worthy trap.
🌡️ Temperature: They Like It Like You Do
Most succulents thrive between 60–80°F. If you're comfortable, they're comfortable. Protect them from frost — most succulents are not cold-hardy and will turn to mush if frozen.
🌿 Fertilizing: Once a Year Is Enough
Feed with a diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring. That's it. Succulents store nutrients in their leaves — they're not out here asking for much.
🚨 Troubleshooting
- Mushy, translucent leaves: Overwatering. Stop immediately, let dry out, check roots for rot.
- Wrinkled, shriveled leaves: Underwatering. Give it a good soak.
- Leggy, stretched growth: Not enough light. Move it to a sunnier spot.
- Brown, crispy leaf tips: Too much direct sun or heat. Provide some afternoon shade.
- Dropping leaves easily: Normal for some varieties, but could also signal stress from overwatering or temperature shock.
