Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa---Southern Purple Pitcher Plant (Venosa) description
🌱🌱 Intermediate "A little picky - but worth it"
The Purple Pitcher Plant, but it got a gothic upgrade: squat, rounded traps drenched in crimson veining that darkens the more sun it gets.
What you get: 1 live plant, currently growing in a 3" pot and shipped bare root (no pot), plus a plant care card, a QR code to our free online plant guide, and a discount code for your next order.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: intermediate. A little picky, but worth it
- Light: full sun. More light means deeper veins
- Water: distilled, rain or RO only. Keep wet; best sitting in a tray of water
- Soil: 1:1 peat moss and perlite or sand. No fertilizer, no compost
- Dormancy: required winter rest
- Outdoors in USDA Zones 6–9. Less cold-tolerant than the northern purpurea
- Native to the coastal plains of the southeastern U.S.
- Mature size: about 10 inches
- Pet friendly
- Eats: gnats, flies, ants
Drinks like a swamp witch. Dry soil is its mortal enemy. Made for bog gardens and sunny patios with a dark side.
Fresh out of the box: ships bare root with no peat, sphagnum or pot. Pot into rinsed, damp peat or sphagnum using only distilled, RO or rain water, set the pot in a dish of the same water, and ease it back into bright light.
Cold weather: heat packs are required November through February for the live arrival guarantee. Outside those months, if any stop on the route from California to you could drop below 50°F, add a heat pack. Plants are dramatic about frostbite, and honestly, fair.
Live arrival guarantee: if your plant shows up in rough shape, send us a photo within 48 hours of delivery. For an eligible claim we may provide a replacement when available, a refund to the original payment method, a partial refund, store credit, or care and recovery instructions when the issue is cosmetic or reversible. Heat packs are required November through February for the guarantee. Orders over $100 ship UPS or USPS with shipping insurance. Orders usually ship within a few days, Monday through Wednesday, so plants never sit in a carrier warehouse over a weekend (we may make an exception if you're close by, likely to receive it by Saturday, or the weather along the route is mild). Full shipping and refund policies are on our website. Every plant is nursery grown in California.
