5.0 Sarracenia purpurea---Purple Pitcher Plant description

The vampire queen of the bog. Deep purple pitchers that lure, drown and digest. If Wednesday Addams started a garden, this is front and center.

What you get: 1 live Sarracenia purpurea, medium size, shipped bare root (no pot), plus a plant care card, a QR code to our free online plant guide, and a discount code for your next order.

Quick facts

  • Difficulty: beginner-friendly
  • Light: full sun. More sun means darker purple. It's basically photosynthesizing in fishnets
  • Water: distilled, rain or RO only. Tap water gives it the ick. Keep wet; sit the pot in a tray of water
  • Soil: 1:1 peat moss and perlite or sand. No fertilizer, no compost
  • Dormancy: required winter rest
  • Outdoors in USDA Zones 3–9. One of the most cold-hardy carnivores alive; it survives freezing winters
  • Mature size: about 12 inches
  • Pet friendly
  • Eats: gnats, flies, ants. Indoors, feed every 2–3 weeks

Low maintenance, high drama. It catches its own meals. You just add water.

Fresh out of the box: ships bare root with no peat, sphagnum or pot. Pot into rinsed, damp peat or sphagnum using only distilled, RO or rain water, set the pot in a dish of the same water, and ease it back into bright light.

Cold weather: heat packs are required November through February for the live arrival guarantee. Outside those months, if any stop on the route from California to you could drop below 50°F, add a heat pack. Plants are dramatic about frostbite, and honestly, fair.

Live arrival guarantee: if your plant shows up in rough shape, send us a photo within 48 hours of delivery. For an eligible claim we may provide a replacement when available, a refund to the original payment method, a partial refund, store credit, or care and recovery instructions when the issue is cosmetic or reversible. Heat packs are required November through February for the guarantee. Orders over $100 ship UPS or USPS with shipping insurance. Orders usually ship within a few days, Monday through Wednesday, so plants never sit in a carrier warehouse over a weekend (we may make an exception if you're close by, likely to receive it by Saturday, or the weather along the route is mild). Full shipping and refund policies are on our website. Every plant is nursery grown in California.

Shipping
  • Do you offer free shipping?
  • Wild Wonders Oasis will run free shipping offers once orders have reached a certain threshold. You can find this information on the Product Pages, Cart Page, and Checkout Page.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your order, location, selected carrier, and shipping speed. Basically, the plants need a safe little travel plan, and unfortunately the postal goblins do require payment. 📦🌿

We do our best to offer available shipping options at checkout so you can choose what works best for you.
  • Do you offer express shipping?
  • Yes — express shipping options may be available at checkout.

At checkout, you’ll see a variety of postal carriers and shipping speeds to choose from, depending on your location and the items in your order. Pick the option that works best for you and your leafy little travel companions. 🌿

Please note that shipping speeds begin once the carrier receives the package — not while your plant is still being lovingly packed like the tiny botanical celebrity it is.
