Meet Astrophytum asterias ‘Hanazono’, a highly sought-after Japanese cultivar of the iconic Star Cactus. ‘Hanazono’ translates to “flower garden,” and this plant lives up to the name with its intricate speckling, raised patterning, and refined symmetry that looks hand-crafted rather than grown.
Spineless, sculptural, and deeply collectible, this cultivar showcases dramatic white flecking and textural contrast across its flattened, star-shaped body. Many specimens are expertly grafted to enhance vigor, stability, and long-term success — making this rare beauty far more forgiving than own-root forms. When mature, it rewards patience with buttery yellow flowers that feel almost unreal against its patterned skin.
This is not a filler cactus. This is a centerpiece.
• Rare Japanese cultivar
• Spineless, flattened star-shaped body
• Intricate white speckling and patterned texture
• Often grafted for enhanced vigor
• High collector and display value
⚠️ Important Shipping Callout
⚠️ This plant is sourced in the USA. No sales allowed outside of USA.
📦 This plant ships BARE ROOT. Pot is NOT included.
Bareroot shipping protects the plant and graft union during transit and ensures it arrives healthy and ready for potting.
Plant Sizing Guide
What Size Am I Getting? Let's Break It Down.
We get it—plant sizes can be confusing. Is a “small” the size of a golf ball or a grapefruit? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Below is a quick guide to help you understand what each size means when shopping our plants. Measurements refer to the plant body, not including the pot (unless noted).
Tiny
- Baby plants or starter plugs. May be rooted or freshly cut. 0.5"–1.5" wide.
- Example: Butterwort plug, small seedling
Small
- Young plant, well-rooted, 1.5"–3" wide or tall.
- Example: Aeonium cutting, sundew cluster
Medium
- Established plant, 3"–5" wide/tall. Ready for repotting or display.
- Example: 2–3 year-old cactus, flowering flytrap
Large
- Mature plant, 5"–8" wide/tall. Great for centerpieces or statement planters.
- Example: Dioscorea elephantipes, pitcher plant
XL (Collector Size)
- Rare or mature specimen, 8"+ or unusually large or sculptural in form.
- Example: Caudex giants, multi-head aeoniums
📦 Note:
- Pot sizes (if included) are listed separately on product pages.
- Some species naturally stay small—even large ones might only be a few inches wide. Check individual listings for details.
- Photos are of representative plants—your plant may vary slightly (because nature’s not into clones).
