Why We Love Them

Bred by celebrated carnivorous plant hybridizer Ed Reed and first offered through Juniper Level Botanic Garden — a certified pedigree in the flytrap world

Jagged, overlapping teeth rimmed in gold make it one of the most distinctive-looking flytraps you can own

Compact, dwarf growth habit (mature size around 4") makes it perfect for windowsills, terrariums, and fairy gardens alike

Traps deepen from green to chili-pepper red as they age, so the plant keeps getting more dramatic over time

Every plant is nursery propagated — a guilt-free way to own a piece of one of the rarest, most geographically restricted plants in North America

Dionaea muscipula 'Red Piranha'---Red Piranha Venus Flytrap description

🌱🌱 Intermediate "A little picky - but worth it"

All plants sold are nursery propagated and legally cultivated, never wild-collected. Wild Venus Flytraps are native to only a narrow strip of coastal North and South Carolina, and their wild populations are increasingly rare — every plant we sell was grown in a nursery, never dug from a bog.

Meet Venus Flytrap 'Red Piranha', an Ed Reed seedling selection first offered through Juniper Level Botanic Garden that took the most famous carnivorous plant on Earth and gave it a serious upgrade in attitude. Instead of the smooth, evenly-spaced teeth of a standard flytrap, Red Piranha grows long, jagged, overlapping cilia that look exactly like rows of tiny piranha fangs, rimmed with a thin band of golden edging just below the teeth. Traps start out green and deepen to a bright, chili-pepper red as they age and soak up light — older traps eventually turn red all over.

It's not just a pretty (terrifying) face. Trigger hairs inside each trap detect movement and snap the jaws shut in a fraction of a second, sealing in any insect unlucky enough to wander inside. Watching it happen never gets old.

Sharp teeth. Deep red bite. Zero chill.

⚠️ Important Shipping Callout
📦 This plant ships in a 2" pot as a young division roughly 1" across. It is not recommended to repot Venus Flytraps, as disturbing the roots can delay growth.
🥰 Current plant color is green and will develop its signature red teeth and golden-edged trap interior with 8+ hours of direct sunlight.

Plant Characteristics
• Rare fanged-tooth Venus Flytrap cultivar bred by Ed Reed
• Long, jagged, overlapping teeth with a distinctive golden edge
• Traps deepen to bright red with age and light
• Dwarf, compact grower — mature size around 4"
• Active, fast-snapping insect-catching behavior
• Exceptional collector appeal

Watering & Feeding

Water:
• Use ONLY distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water
• Keep soil consistently moist using the tray method
• Never allow to dry out completely

Feeding:
• Catches its own insects
• No fertilizer needed
• Avoid triggering traps unnecessarily, as each trap has a limited lifespan

Growing Medium

• Carnivorous plant soil mix
• Sphagnum peat moss with perlite or silica sand
🚫 No fertilizer soil, compost, or standard potting mix

Hardiness, Dormancy & Compatible Grow Zones

Like all Venus Flytraps, Red Piranha naturally experiences winter dormancy and needs this annual rest period to stay healthy long-term. Once established, it tolerates brief temperature swings from roughly 20°F to 90°F, but sustained hard freezes in a container can damage the rhizome — protect from prolonged deep cold.

Dormancy:

  • Winter

Native Area:

Cultivar of a species native to a narrow strip of coastal North and South Carolina, USA — wild populations are now rare and protected

Propagation

• Division of mature rhizomes
• Tissue culture
(Cultivar traits, including tooth shape and coloration, are best preserved through vegetative propagation)

  • Indoors
