Dionaea muscipula 'Red Piranha'---Red Piranha Venus Flytrap description
🌱🌱 Intermediate "A little picky - but worth it"
Fierce, fanged and ready to bite. Jagged overlapping teeth like rows of tiny piranha fangs, rimmed in gold, on traps that ripen from green to chili-pepper red.
What you get: 1 live young division, about 1 inch across, shipped in its 2" plastic pot, plus a plant care card, a QR code to our free online plant guide, and a discount code for your next order. It arrives green to reddish-pink and colors up with 8+ hours of direct sun. Don't repot on arrival; flytraps hate root disturbance.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: intermediate. A little picky, but worth it
- Light: full sun, 8+ hours
- Water: distilled, rain or RO only. Tray method. Never let it dry out
- Soil: peat moss with perlite or silica sand. No potting mix or fertilizer
- Dormancy: required. It shrinks and looks half-dead in winter. It is not dead. Do not throw it out
- Outdoors in USDA Zones 7–9; colder with winter protection
- Mature size: about 4 inches. A compact dwarf
- Pet friendly
- Don't poke the traps for fun. Each one only closes a handful of times
An Ed Reed selection first offered through Juniper Level Botanic Garden. Nursery propagated, never wild-collected: wild flytraps grow only in a narrow strip of the coastal Carolinas and are increasingly rare. Sharp teeth. Deep red bite. Zero chill.
Fresh out of the box: give it 1–2 weeks to settle. A droopy leaf or a slow week is normal travel drama, not a death sentence.
Cold weather: heat packs are required November through February for the live arrival guarantee. Outside those months, if any stop on the route from California to you could drop below 50°F, add a heat pack. Plants are dramatic about frostbite, and honestly, fair.
Live arrival guarantee: if your plant shows up in rough shape, send us a photo within 48 hours of delivery. For an eligible claim we may provide a replacement when available, a refund to the original payment method, a partial refund, store credit, or care and recovery instructions when the issue is cosmetic or reversible. Heat packs are required November through February for the guarantee. Orders over $100 ship UPS or USPS with shipping insurance. Orders usually ship within a few days, Monday through Wednesday, so plants never sit in a carrier warehouse over a weekend (we may make an exception if you're close by, likely to receive it by Saturday, or the weather along the route is mild). Full shipping and refund policies are on our website. Every plant is nursery grown in California.
